Buying a Fiber Laser Cutter in Canada
What actually matters when you specify a machine — choosing laser power, sheet versus tube, the electrical work nobody mentions until installation day, and what "Canadian support" should mean on paper.

A fiber laser cutter is usually the largest single capital purchase a fabrication shop makes. The specification decisions you make up front — power, bed size, enclosure, automation — determine what work you can quote for the next decade. This guide covers the choices that matter most, and the ones that are easy to get wrong.
1. Choosing laser power
Laser power is the first number everyone asks about, and the most common place to overspend. Higher wattage does two things: it raises the maximum thickness you can cut, and it cuts thin material faster. If your work is mostly thin gauge, extra kilowatts buy you speed rather than capability — and speed only pays if you have the order book to keep the machine loaded.
A practical way to size the machine: take the thickest material you cut regularly, not the thickest you have ever cut. One-off thick jobs are usually cheaper to outsource than to buy capacity for.

Watch the duty cycle, not just the peak. A machine rated for 40mm will cut it — but slowly, and with high gas consumption. If thick plate is a daily activity rather than an occasional one, size up rather than running the machine at its ceiling.
2. Sheet cutting or tube cutting
These are different machines, not settings on the same machine. A flat-bed sheet cutter works on plate held on a slatted bed. A tube cutter holds the workpiece in rotating chucks and cuts as it turns, which is what allows cope cuts, saddle joints, and angled end profiles on structural sections.
If you are currently bandsawing tube and then grinding fit-up by hand, a tube laser usually removes more labour than a second sheet machine would. Weld prep that used to be a manual operation comes off the machine ready to assemble.
Choosing between the two tube platforms
- TubeCut Double Chuck — 1.5–12kW, sections to 360mm, 6,000mm bed. Two synchronized chucks. The practical entry point for most shops.
- TubeCut Triple Chuck — 6–30kW, sections to 680mm round, 12,000mm bed, loads to 1,500kg. The third chuck supports the workpiece through the cut, which is what holds accuracy on long, heavy structural profiles.
The deciding factor is usually section size and length rather than power. If you are running 12-metre structural steel, bed length settles the question before wattage does.
3. What's different about buying in Canada
Most fiber laser specifications are written for other markets. Three things reliably catch Canadian buyers out:
Electrical supply
Canadian industrial shops commonly run 600V three-phase, while many machines arrive configured for other standards. This has to be sorted before the machine ships, not discovered on installation day. Currency and financing
A machine quoted in US dollars exposes you to exchange-rate movement between quote and delivery — a real cost on a purchase this size, and one that is rarely mentioned in the sales conversation. Financing in Canadian dollars removes that risk entirely.
Who actually shows up
This is the one that matters most and is hardest to verify before you buy. Ask directly: who performs the installation, where is the technician based, and what is the response commitment when the machine is down? A machine that is cheaper up front but waits weeks for an overseas technician is not cheaper.
A useful question to ask any supplier: "If this machine stops on a Tuesday morning, what happens, and who do I call?" The specificity of the answer tells you most of what you need to know.

5. Cost, financing, and payback
Purchase price is only part of the operating picture. When you compare quotes, account for assist gas consumption, consumables such as nozzles and protective windows, electrical supply work, and whether the machine needs a water chiller and the plumbing to serve it.

- On-site installation and commissioning — rigging, levelling, alignment, calibration, and first-part test cuts, with the technician not leaving until the machine produces parts to spec.
- Operator training at your facility — machine operation, software, nesting, maintenance routines, and safety, included with the purchase rather than sold separately.
