How fiber laser sheet cutting works
A fiber laser sheet cutting machine focuses a fiber laser beam onto flat metal plate held on a slatted bed, and moves the cutting head across it under CNC control. The beam melts a narrow kerf while an assist gas blows the molten material clear, leaving a clean edge that usually needs no secondary finishing. Fiber sources cut sheet metal faster and far more efficiently than the older CO₂ technology they replaced, and with no cutting-gas-generating optics to maintain.
Wavlon's sheet machines run a MAX fiber laser source with FSCUT control and Cypcut/Hypcut software, reaching cutting speeds of 100–120 m/min depending on the series. What changes between ProCut, PowerCut, and UltraCut is not the core cutting process — it is the enclosure, the bed format, and the automation around it.
Assist gas: the choice that sets your edge and your cost
Assist gas matters as much as laser power for the finish you get and the gas you pay for. The three options behave differently:

The practical trade-off: nitrogen gives the cleanest edge but consumes the most gas, so shops running high volumes of thin material often move to compressed air to cut running costs, and reserve nitrogen for stainless and aluminum where edge quality is non-negotiable.
Reading bed formats: what 3015 and 4020 mean
Bed sizes are quoted as a four-digit code for the cutting area in decimetres. 3015 is a 3,000 × 1,500mm bed — the standard format that fits a full 4×8 sheet with room to spare. 4020 is 4,000 × 2,000mm, for oversized plate and longer nests, and the ProCut UL variant adds a 6020 (6,000 × 2,000mm) option. A larger bed means fewer sheet changes on big jobs, but takes more floor space — size it to the plate you actually buy.
Choosing power and enclosure
Two decisions size a sheet machine. Power sets maximum thickness and cutting speed: all three series start at 3kW, ProCut and PowerCut reach 12kW (up to 35mm mild steel), and UltraCut goes to 20kW+ for the thickest plate. As with any laser, size to the thickness you cut regularly rather than the heaviest one-off.
Enclosure is the second axis, and it maps cleanly to how you run:
- ProCut — open gantry, full-width access, 3015 and 4020 beds. The workhorse for mixed-material job shops.
- PowerCut — fully enclosed cabin with integrated fume extraction and Class 1 safety built in, on a compact 3015 footprint. Built for production.
- UltraCut — dual-pallet exchange tables so the machine cuts one sheet while you load the next, up to 20kW+. For heavy, high-throughput production.
